MMO Winter Events: Forced Cheer & Festive Fights
Itās that time of year again when every online game with a half-decent events team slaps some holly on its loading screen and calls it a holiday celebration. As a longtime observer of these seasonal rituals, Iāve come to expect a certain level of kitschāsnowball fights, gift-giving quests, and Santa suits jammed into worlds that otherwise have no business hosting Christmas. But Iāll take it. When you spend most of your year grinding orcs or looting post-apocalyptic ruins, a little forced cheer is better than none. So hereās a rundown of whatās happening across the MMO and online gaming landscape this winter, from the trite to the truly weird.
The Classics
Some events are so deeply baked into their games that missing them would feel like skipping Thanksgiving dinner. Final Fantasy XI and XIV both run their Starlight Celebrations, complete with decorations, special quests, and that warm, pixelated glow only Square Enix can muster. Lord of the Rings Onlineās Yule Festival returns, even if its timeline makes no senseāby the lore, the Fellowship didnāt have time for a single Yule party. Guild Wars 2ās Wintersday is back with snowball fights and toy rescues, while RuneScapeās Christmas event delivers holiday armor thatās more āfestive trimā than āanother Santa suit.ā And of course, Star Wars: The Old Republic celebrates Life Day, as do Star Wars Galaxies Legends and SWGEmuābecause if one game can milk a Wookiee-themed holiday, three can do it better. (Empire in Flames goes rogue with Boonta Eve, which at least changes the spice.)
