Expedition 33 Dev: Generative AI Is ‘Scary
Guillaume Broche, creative director of the surprise 2025 hit Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has voiced his concerns about generative AI’s growing role in game development. Speaking on Konbini’s Video Game Club, Broche admitted the technology’s potential is “a little scary” and warned that one day it might be possible to “churn out a game in five seconds with a prompt.” His comments arrive amid a broader industry debate over whether AI-driven efficiency will come at the expense of human creativity.
Sandfall Interactive, the small team behind Expedition 33, does not use generative AI for creative work. Broche argued that such tools “take away from the joy of creating things.” Despite this principled stance, the studio briefly faced controversy when AI-generated placeholder assets slipped into the final build. Those assets were promptly removed after being noticed, but the incident underscored how easily the technology can infiltrate even cautious development pipelines.
Broche acknowledged that while video games remain somewhat protected from generative AI due to their technical complexity, he fears the day when that barrier falls. โWill it be a good game? I hope not,โ he said, capturing the anxiety shared by many in the industry. The debate over AI’s roleโwhether for cost reduction, temporary placeholders, or full-scale creationโcontinues to polarize developers and fans alike.
