SUMMARY:City Weekend: Impermanence & death
DESCRIPTION:This is going to happen to you\, so start focusing on what makes your life truly worthwhile.\nThe incredibly moving poem\, Heart Spoon\, by Kyabje Pabongkha Rinpoche clearly illustrates what happens to you when you die. The text repeats again and again\, “This is going to happen to you.” So this weekend retreat will explore this heart-wrenching poem along with a variety of practices that can help us start focusing on what makes life truly meaningful. \n“Death is not something to be afraid of; it is a natural transition\, like changing clothes. Understanding impermanence inspires us to live meaningfully\, to cherish every moment\, and to use this precious life to benefit others and attain enlightenment.” – Lama Zopa Rinpoche \nWe often make the profound mistake of ignoring and denying the reality of death as we continually immerse ourselves in a multitude of worldly experiences. Teachings on impermanence and death are not meant to frighten us\, but can serve as a powerful motivator to practice as well as a significant reminder of how extraordinary this human life truly is. Right now\, we have the rare opportunity to develop our minds in the most positive ways\, to practice virtue\, and to live with great purpose. NOW is the perfect time. \nDuring this weekend\, Ven. Amy Miller will guide us through teachings and meditations on profound Buddhist concepts drawn from the unique teachings of Lama Zopa Rinpoche\, one of the founders of the FPMT. Ven. Amy will also offer study and meditation techniques of daily mindfulness practices to take home. This program is ideal for anyone who wishes to ignite or deepen their personal practice by relying on Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s heart advice. \nYour teacher\nVenerable Amy Miller is a beloved spiritual teacher\, practitioner and Buddhist nun in the Tibetan tradition. She has dedicated her life to sharing the profound teachings of Buddhism with the world. With her gentle presence\, insightful wisdom and compassionate heart\, she has touched the lives of many around the world\, inspiring them to find inner peace and help transform their minds. \nMore information about Ven. Amy Miller\, click here. \nPractical information\nDates and times:\nFriday May 16: 19.00 – 20.30 hrs (only online)\nSaturday May 17: 10.00 – 16.00 hrs\nSunday May 18: 10.00 – 16.00 hrs\nLocation: both at our center in Amsterdam and via Zoom.\nLanguage: English\nStudy materials & recordings: The classes will be recorded (audio and video) and provided to you as well as the study materials\nRegistration: You can register for the whole weekend\nLast-minute registration: Please also send an email to amsterdam@maitreya.nl\, to ensure we can send you the necessary Zoomlink and materials in time to join the class.\nDonation\nDāna (generosity) is one of the cornerstones of the Buddhist path. By virtue of their generosity\, the Buddha and the ordained sangha offer us the teachings\, and in exchange\, the lay community supports Dharma centers and the monastic community. This interdependence is essential for us to share the Dharma and continue our work to benefit all sentient beings. With your donation we support our teachers in their cost of living and we uphold our dharma center\, which is managed entirely by volunteers. \nThe suggested donation for this weekend is €85. For students and people with low income\, the suggested donation is €60. Please send us an email if you’d like to make use of this option. Keep in mind that the donation amount should never be an obstacle to your access to the Dharma. Please contact us if it might be an obstacle for you.

SUMMARY:Thirty Seven Steps to the Lasting Happiness of Enlightenment – What are you waiting for?
DESCRIPTION:This special 10-day residential course is open to all levels of practitioners: beginners and experienced alike.\nWe are honoured and delighted that Geshe Tenzin Zopa accepted our request to give for the first time a 10-day course at Tushita! \nThis special course will be based on the 37 Practices of Bodhisattva\, a text by Togmay Sangpo\, one of the great bodhisattvas who became an Arya Bodhisattva within a very short period through practising the 37 practices. He then revealed this teaching in a condensed and practical way so that beings like us will be able to immediately apply them in our every day life. \nGeshe Tenzin Zopa: \n“When we come together for Dharma discourse\, it is not simply for fun or to pass our time. It is to extract knowledge as mindfood\, not for the sake of intellectual knowledge but solely to benefit others each day\, according to one’s best ability until one attains full enlightenment. Our coming together with the right motivation can change the world. To change the world does not mean changing the external world; it means changing your inner world\, your own mind\, for only then\, can you influence and transform the minds of others on the planet. This is the sole purpose for learning the 37 Practices of to Enlightenment\, the 37 practices of the Bodhisattvas\, without which there is no means by which one can become a Buddha. \nThis teaching is a special lineage practice undertaken by all the past by great Tibetan yogis and now by His Holiness The Dalai Lama and our Gurus. The 37 Practices are indispensable throughout one’s spiritual life – from the preliminary stages of one’s practice up to and beyond Buddhahood because it is the means by which sentient beings can be helped and guided.

Your life then becomes peaceful and joyful and somewhat protected from the ups and downs of the external world. For beginner to advanced meditators.\nFacilitator\nVen. Gönpo is an accredited FDCW facilitator and a Buddhist monk based in Australia. He discovered Buddhism as a child through martial arts movies and TV shows\, this was the inspiration for the childhood dream of becoming a wandering kung fu monk. It was a few decades before part of that dream could be realized with many other life adventures distracting him from the spiritual path in his teens and twenties.\nIt wasn’t until he was in his thirties that Gönpo began to really understand the power of Buddhist teachings when he used them to navigate the emotional roller-coaster of life’s many experiences such as a marriage break down and raising children alone. Fortunately\, due the kindness of his teachers and great good karma\, after his children finished school\, Gönpo was able to fulfil the long-held dream of becoming a monk\, albeit without the kung fu. Ending a 20-year career as a high school teacher of languages\, he become a wandering monk spending time studying and meditating in Europe\, India and Nepal before returning to his hometown\, Brisbane\, to take up the role of Spiritual Care Practitioner at Karuna Hospice Services\, giving care and support to people with life limiting illnesses and their families.\nIn his time as a school teacher\, it was the feedback from students around mindfulness practices and life lessons that had the biggest impact on Gönpo\, motivating him to become a 16 Guidelines for a Happy Life facilitator. In his sessions\, Gönpo encourages discussion and deep engagement in the topics\, challenging participants to examine their own ways of thinking. Through understanding how we are now\, we are better equipped to develop the habits that will bring us closer to how we want to be\, interacting with our own minds and the people around us in ways that will make us and the communities we live in\, happier and healthier.\nMore info\nFor more information please visit the Maitreya Institute website

SUMMARY:The 4 Noble Truths & Their 16 Characteristics - Yeshin Norbu
DESCRIPTION:The 4 Noble Truths & Their 16 CharacteristicsThe 4 Noble Truths & Their 16 Characteristics\nThis in-depth intermediate level course will deepen your understanding of the Four Noble Truths and their 16 characteristics. The Four Noble Truths are the foundational teachings of Buddhism\, offering profound insight into the nature of suffering\, its causes and the path to liberation.\nCourse Details\nAbout This Course\nThe course will offer a comprehensive exploration of these core teachings\, guiding you through their profound implications for both personal transformation and spiritual practice. Learning the Four Noble Truths can offer a range of profound benefits that can transform your approach to life and spiritual practice\, such as:\nClarity on the nature of suffering: By gaining insight into why suffering arises\, you can begin to release attachment to things that are impermanent and avoid unnecessary suffering in your life.\nPath to liberation: Learning this path helps you cultivate ethical conduct\, mental discipline\, and wisdom\, fostering a life of greater peace and fulfillment.\nDeepened compassion & wisdom: By understanding the interconnectedness of all beings and the causes of suffering\, you naturally develop greater compassion and empathy. The teachings also lead to wisdom by showing you how to see things as they truly are\, beyond the surface-level appearance of phenomena..\nTransformation of perspective: Instead of viewing difficulties as obstacles\, you begin to see them as opportunities for spiritual growth and a means of developing resilience and inner strength.\nYour Teacher\nVenerable Khadro brings years of experience teaching Buddhist philosophy and meditation in the tradition of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Her clear and practical approach makes profound Buddhist concepts accessible to modern students.

SUMMARY:Lojong Mind Training
DESCRIPTION:Lojong Mind TrainingHow its application can help us prepare for death and difficult times with confidence and compassion\n“Happiness should be brought under control\, and suffering ended. If you are lonely\, it will be the companion of sorrow. If you are sick\, it will nurse you.” – saying of the Kadam Lamas. \nLojong or ‘mind training’ is an essential part of Buddhist training that teaches us how to transform problems into opportunities for deep spiritual growth. Ven. Amy will explore how lojong practices can help us lessen fear\, regret and confusion in times of adversity; so this program will not only help us prepare for the major transition of death\, but will also show us how we can develop a more peaceful and meaningful life. \n“In our heart we do not think death will happen to us. Living in denial we spend our lives in distraction filling each available moment with constant busyness.”- Geshe Jampa Tegchok \nThis 4-session course will incorporate a variety of lojong texts such as the profound yet brief\, Turning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment\, by Jikme Tenpe Nyime\, the Third Drodupchen Rinpoche and The Eight Verses of Thought Transformation by Kadampa Geshe Langri Thangpa. \nAdditionally\, lojong practice helps us: \nCultivate mental resilience\nDevelop compassion\nShift focus from external blame to self-reflection and accountability\nReduce anxiety\, increase inner peace\, and develop healthier behavior overall.\nVen. Amy will also be guiding a full weekend on Lojong\, which will be more focused on meditation\, at our retreat center in Loenen. \nYour teacher\nVenerable Amy Miller is a beloved spiritual teacher\, practitioner and Buddhist nun in the Tibetan tradition.
