SUMMARY:Secular Spirituality\, the Science of Consciousness and the Illusion of Self
DESCRIPTION:Secular Spirituality\, the Science of Consciousness and the Illusion of Self⚠️ This event will be available live in English\, with translation into Spanish and Italian (registration links below).\n—\nJoin Geshe Tenzin Namdak\, Thomas Metzinger and Scott Snibbe for a profound dialogue on Secular Spirituality\, The Science of Consciousness\, and the Illusion of Self. This online event\, hosted by Science & Wisdom LIVE\, in partnership with FDCW and several other partners (below)\, will explore the intersections between Buddhist philosophy and secular spirituality\, focusing on key themes like consciousness\, selfhood\, and the potential for spiritual growth without religious belief.\nDrawing on Metzinger’s philosophical work on the science of consciousness and Geshe Namdak’s deep understanding of Buddhist mind science\, they will engage with the challenging concept of “no-self” and discuss how modern science and ancient wisdom can together reshape our understanding of spirituality in the 21st century.\nThis event offers a unique opportunity to reflect on whether spiritual practices can thrive outside traditional religious contexts and how both secular and contemplative traditions provide insights into consciousness and personal transformation. Perfect for those interested in philosophy\, Buddhism\, and the evolving nature of spirituality in today’s world.\nAbout the Topics\nSecular spirituality offers a path to personal transformation without relying on religious belief\, encouraging inner growth through practices like mindfulness and contemplation. The science of consciousness explores how subjective experience arises from the brain\, bridging the gap between philosophy and neuroscience. Meanwhile\, the illusion of self\, a central theme in both Buddhist philosophy and modern cognitive science\, challenges our deeply held notion of a fixed identity. Together\, these ideas invite us to re-examine who we are and how we relate to the world\, offering profound insights into both spiritual and scientific inquiries.\nAbout the Speakers\nGeshe Tenzin Namdak\nInitially an environmental researcher with a degree in hydrology from Van Hall Larenstein University\, Geshe Namdak began studying Buddhism in 1993 and was ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He completed the 20-year Geshe program at Sera Jey Monastic University in 2017\, followed by a year of Vajrayana studies at Gyume Tantric College in 2019\, the first Westerner to do so. With a strong interest in science\, he has organised various dialogues on contemporary science and ancient contemplative wisdom of the mind. Currently\, he is the resident teacher at Jamyang Buddhist Centre\, London\, and teaches worldwide. His latest book\, “Freedom Through Correct Knowing“\, explores the path to liberation through understanding reality as it truly is.\nProf. Thomas Metzinger\nThomas Metzinger is a distinguished philosopher and cognitive scientist\, renowned for his work in consciousness studies. Formerly a Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz\, Metzinger has led prominent academic and research organisations\, including the German Cognitive Science Society and the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness. His widely acclaimed books\, such as The Elephant and the Blind and The Ego Tunnel\, explore the nature of self and mind. Metzinger is also a member of the European Commission’s Expert Group on AI ethics and the president of the Barbara Wengeler Foundation.\nYou can learn more about Thomas and access lots of his work for free on his website: thomasmetzinger.com\, where you will find an open-access version of his book The Elephant and the Blind\, which we recommend reading in preparation for the talk!\nScott Snibbe\nScott Snibbe is the Executive Director of A Skeptic’s Path to Enlightenment\, a nonprofit organization\, author of How to Train a Happy Mind and podcast host\, dedicated to teaching secular forms of analytical meditation. Snibbe is a longtime student of Tibetan Buddhism whose teachers include Geshe Ngawang Dakpa\, Choden Rinpoche\, Ven. Rene Feusi\, Lama Zopa Rinpoche\, Gyumed Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jampa\, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Inspired by his teachers\, he leads meditations that infuse the pure lineage of the great Buddhist masters with science\, humour\, and the realities of the modern world.\nPartners\nThis event is organised by Science & Wisdom LIVE in partnership with Jamyang London Buddhist Centre\, Foundation for Developing Compassion and Wisdom (FDCW)\, Nagarjuna Madrid\, Instituto Lama Tsongkhapa (ILTK) and Mind Science Academy (MSA).\nRegistration\nThis event is open to all on donation\, and registration is required. SUMMARY:16 Guidelines-Second retreat weekend for a happier and more meaningful life | Organized by Chenrezig Institute - Foundation for Developing Compassion and Wisdom
DESCRIPTION:16 Guidelines-Second retreat weekend for a happier and more meaningful life | Organized by Chenrezig InstituteAbout the Sessions\nJoin Peter Shepherd for the second of the in person immersive weekends at The Chenrezig Institute Wellbeing Centre to explore the 16 Guidelines in a retreat setting\, you are welcome to attend the entire retreat\, join for a day or even one session!\nThese 16 guided meditations and discussions will take place over two immersive retreat weekends\, this will facilitate both an intellectual understanding and personal experience\, to act as a launching pad for you to bring them into your daily life.\nA Little bit of Background\nThe 16 guidelines are for everyone who would like to experience greater wellbeing\, ease\, contentment\, meaning\, fulfilment\, connection and joy. Each guideline is based on a positive quality.\nDiscoveries in neuroscience have shown that we have the potential to develop and transform our minds in a positive way. Practising these Guidelines can help strengthen our existing qualities and deepen our connection with others for a more meaningful and happier life.\nThe aim of the 16 Guidelines is to help people create long-term happiness and fulfilment for themselves and others. Each guideline represents a universal value or attitude which is rooted in the foundations of compassion and wisdom.\nThe 16 guidelines are a contemporary presentation of ancient wisdom\, originating from the 7th-century King Songtsen Gampo from Tibet. They are a practical yet profound framework with which to orientate ourselves and our actions in the world.\nThere are precise causes of happiness and the 16 Guidelines is a powerful yet simple way for us to create these causes without needing to be associated with any particular belief or spiritual tradition.\n“Watch your thoughts\, they become your words;\nwatch your words\, they become your actions;\nwatch your actions\, they become your habits;\nwatch your habits\, they become your character;\nwatch your character\, it becomes your destiny.”\n– Lao Tzu\nBookings and Cost:\nThe recommended contribution is $120 but you are welcome to pay whatever you are comfortable with. Your contributions of $30\, $60 or $120 will all be very helpful allowing the Institute to continue to offer activities and courses at the center and online.\nFor more information and bookings please visit the Chenrezig Institute website\nWhy meditate?\nWhen you control your mind with wisdom you create the space you need to discover peace and joy. Your life then becomes peaceful and joyful and somewhat protected from the ups and downs of the external world. SUMMARY:When the Chocolate Runs Out
DESCRIPTION:“I could tell you about attachment for one whole year\, but you’ll never begin to really understand it until you start to look deeply inside.” Lama Yeshe\nGetting what we want\, like delicious chocolate\, a great job or a new partner\, is our main method for achieving happiness\, and we certainly work hard at it! But what if we lose it? Or what if we can’t find it? What then? \nBehind the world of attachment lies the origin of all our problems \, according to Buddha’s teachings. We therefore need to understand exactly what it is or as Lama Zopa Rinpoche puts it\, it will seem that we have to give up happiness when we heard that we have to give up attachment. \nVenerable Robina Courtin will teach from Lama Yeshe’s book When the Chocolate Runs out\, to explain tous what attachment is\, how it promise us happiness and only delivers suffering in the long run and the real happiness we can access when we give it up.

SUMMARY:Making Friends with Death
DESCRIPTION:“Death itself is not what causes fear. It is simply the consciousness leaving the body; one labels death on that event. There is no terrifying death from its own side; the terrifying death is made up by our mind. We have made death terrifying. What causes the worry and fear\, what makes death so difficult is attachment\, desire\, clinging: to this life\, to the body\, possessions\, family\, friends and so forth.” — Lama Zopa Rinpoche\, How to Face Death Without Fear \nImagine meeting death head on\, armed with knowledge and confidence. In this weekend course\, we will learn to engage the mind with teachings and practices that prepare us for this natural event\, so that we can accept it and face it without fear; and help our loved ones do the same. \nBuddhism explains that thinking about death is not morbid\, but useful\, logical\, and necessary because to die well\, peacefully and without fear\, we need to live well by leading lives based on ethics\, compassion\, kindness\, honesty\, and altruism. \nIn this course\, we will look at what death is; what happens when one is dying\, what one should do beforehand to prepare\, as well as during the death process itself\, and what happens after death.

SUMMARY:How to Develop Bodhichitta
DESCRIPTION:This course invites you to explore the rich meditation traditions of Tibetan Buddhism\, particularly focusing on practices that develop compassion and loving kindness. Unlike some meditation approaches that might feel abstract or difficult to grasp\, Tibetan Buddhism offers remarkably clear\, step-by-step instructions that have been refined over centuries. The heart of these practices centers around cultivating “bodhichitta” – an awakened heart-mind that genuinely wishes for the happiness and freedom from suffering of all beings.\nThese aren’t just philosophical concepts to contemplate intellectually. The course provides practical techniques that help transform your everyday mindset. You’ll learn specific meditation methods that gradually shift your natural self-concern toward a more expansive awareness of others’ well-being.\nWhat makes these practices special is that they tap into qualities we already possess. We all have moments of natural kindness and empathy – this approach simply helps nurture and develop those innate capacities until they become more stable and accessible in our daily lives.\nThese practices are considered the very heart of Buddha’s teaching because they point toward enlightenment itself – but not as a self-centered spiritual achievement. Rather\, enlightenment is pursued specifically for the benefit it brings to all beings. The path becomes about developing our fullest potential precisely so we can be of greatest service to others.

SUMMARY:Freedom Through Understanding: The Buddhist Path to Happiness and Liberation
DESCRIPTION:Buddha says that the main source of our suffering is the delusions in our mind\, such as attachment\, anger\, and the rest. They cause suffering because they’re distressing\, but they also have the function of misrepresenting the world to us — in other words\, we’re not in touch with reality.\nWe will look at the Buddhist approach to how things exist\, first conventionally — the view of karma\, how the mind exists\, how to develop compassion; and then ultimately — the view of dependent arising and emptiness. \nGetting in touch with reality is the method for achieving our own happiness and our ability to be of benefit to others.

SUMMARY:A Bird Needs Two Wings: Wisdom and Compassion
DESCRIPTION:It is said that just as a bird needs two wings\, we need both wisdom and compassion. The inner wing of our practice is wisdom\, and the outer wing is compassion. That’s the action wing\, the political wing\, the social-work wing. When you work on your own mind\, you are developing the meditative wing\, wisdom. The more you do so\, the more you will decrease your delusions\, increase your positive qualities\, and increase your own sense of happiness. Therefore\, you will increase your sense of connectedness\, and inevitably\, you’ve got no choice but to put yourself out there to benefit others. A bird needs two wings. It’s not enough just for us to have internal practice. It’s got to be externalized. It’s an inevitable product of our practice if we’re doing the job properly.\nIn this course we will come to understand the methods to develop both our inner wisdom and compassion in order to be of benefit to others and ourselves.
