SUMMARY:Series of 8 Nyung Nays
DESCRIPTION:Nyung Nay (or “Fasting Retreat” in English) is a Vajrayana practice from the Kriya (“Action”) class of Tantra. It is a powerful\, quick and effective method to purify a lot of negativities and at the same time collect a vast amount of merit. Meditators of the past have been known to purify such diseases as leprosy through this practice. However\, the principal purpose of the practice is the attainment of supreme Enlightenment for the benefit of all living beings.\nJust before the annual Tibetan festival of Saka Dawa (the anniversary of Shakyamuni Buddha’s birth\, enlightenment and paranirvana) Tushita offers a series of eight Nyung Nays. Participants may join one or more Nyung Nays. \nNyung NaysOne Nyung Nay requires being resident here for 3 nights\, in order to incorporate 2 full practice days. Check in on day 1\, days 2 & 3 are the practice days\, and if you are not continuing for another Nyung Nay\, checkout is on day 4. \nEach Nyung Nay consists of 7 practice sessions spread over this time\, the first starting at 3:30am on day 2 (which is why you have to stay here the night before) and ending after breakfast on the 4th day. Our Nyung Nay Retreat is composed of a cycle of 8 Nyung Nays\, and it is possible to take just one\, or any number in between up to all 8! \nIf you haven’t done this practice before though\, you will be required to join the first one where full instruction will be given. \nIn each session we practice the sadhana (“method of accomplishment”) of Chenrezig\, the Buddha symbolizing compassion. The sadhana involves meditating on bodhicitta (the aspiration to attain enlightenment in order to help all beings)\, visualizing Chenrezig\, reciting prayers and mantras\, and performing prostrations. Each session lasts approximately 3 hours.

SUMMARY:Thirty Seven Steps to the Lasting Happiness of Enlightenment – What are you waiting for?
DESCRIPTION:This special 10-day residential course is open to all levels of practitioners: beginners and experienced alike.\nWe are honoured and delighted that Geshe Tenzin Zopa accepted our request to give for the first time a 10-day course at Tushita! \nThis special course will be based on the 37 Practices of Bodhisattva\, a text by Togmay Sangpo\, one of the great bodhisattvas who became an Arya Bodhisattva within a very short period through practising the 37 practices. He then revealed this teaching in a condensed and practical way so that beings like us will be able to immediately apply them in our every day life. \nGeshe Tenzin Zopa: \n“When we come together for Dharma discourse\, it is not simply for fun or to pass our time. It is to extract knowledge as mindfood\, not for the sake of intellectual knowledge but solely to benefit others each day\, according to one’s best ability until one attains full enlightenment. Our coming together with the right motivation can change the world. To change the world does not mean changing the external world; it means changing your inner world\, your own mind\, for only then\, can you influence and transform the minds of others on the planet. This is the sole purpose for learning the 37 Practices of to Enlightenment\, the 37 practices of the Bodhisattvas\, without which there is no means by which one can become a Buddha. \nThis teaching is a special lineage practice undertaken by all the past by great Tibetan yogis and now by His Holiness The Dalai Lama and our Gurus. The 37 Practices are indispensable throughout one’s spiritual life – from the preliminary stages of one’s practice up to and beyond Buddhahood because it is the means by which sentient beings can be helped and guided.

SUMMARY:City Weekend: Impermanence & death
DESCRIPTION:This is going to happen to you\, so start focusing on what makes your life truly worthwhile.\nThe incredibly moving poem\, Heart Spoon\, by Kyabje Pabongkha Rinpoche clearly illustrates what happens to you when you die. The text repeats again and again\, “This is going to happen to you.” So this weekend retreat will explore this heart-wrenching poem along with a variety of practices that can help us start focusing on what makes life truly meaningful. \n“Death is not something to be afraid of; it is a natural transition\, like changing clothes. Understanding impermanence inspires us to live meaningfully\, to cherish every moment\, and to use this precious life to benefit others and attain enlightenment.” – Lama Zopa Rinpoche \nWe often make the profound mistake of ignoring and denying the reality of death as we continually immerse ourselves in a multitude of worldly experiences. Teachings on impermanence and death are not meant to frighten us\, but can serve as a powerful motivator to practice as well as a significant reminder of how extraordinary this human life truly is. Right now\, we have the rare opportunity to develop our minds in the most positive ways\, to practice virtue\, and to live with great purpose. NOW is the perfect time. \nDuring this weekend\, Ven. Amy Miller will guide us through teachings and meditations on profound Buddhist concepts drawn from the unique teachings of Lama Zopa Rinpoche\, one of the founders of the FPMT. Ven. Amy will also offer study and meditation techniques of daily mindfulness practices to take home. This program is ideal for anyone who wishes to ignite or deepen their personal practice by relying on Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s heart advice. \nYour teacher\nVenerable Amy Miller is a beloved spiritual teacher\, practitioner and Buddhist nun in the Tibetan tradition. She has dedicated her life to sharing the profound teachings of Buddhism with the world. With her gentle presence\, insightful wisdom and compassionate heart\, she has touched the lives of many around the world\, inspiring them to find inner peace and help transform their minds. \nMore information about Ven. Amy Miller\, click here. \nPractical information\nDates and times:\nFriday May 16: 19.00 – 20.30 hrs (only online)\nSaturday May 17: 10.00 – 16.00 hrs\nSunday May 18: 10.00 – 16.00 hrs\nLocation: both at our center in Amsterdam and via Zoom.\nLanguage: English\nStudy materials & recordings: The classes will be recorded (audio and video) and provided to you as well as the study materials\nRegistration: You can register for the whole weekend\nLast-minute registration: Please also send an email to amsterdam@maitreya.nl\, to ensure we can send you the necessary Zoomlink and materials in time to join the class.\nDonation\nDāna (generosity) is one of the cornerstones of the Buddhist path. By virtue of their generosity\, the Buddha and the ordained sangha offer us the teachings\, and in exchange\, the lay community supports Dharma centers and the monastic community. This interdependence is essential for us to share the Dharma and continue our work to benefit all sentient beings. With your donation we support our teachers in their cost of living and we uphold our dharma center\, which is managed entirely by volunteers. \nThe suggested donation for this weekend is €85. For students and people with low income\, the suggested donation is €60. Please send us an email if you’d like to make use of this option. Keep in mind that the donation amount should never be an obstacle to your access to the Dharma. Please contact us if it might be an obstacle for you.

SUMMARY:Events for May 2025 – Jamyang London Buddhist Centre
DESCRIPTION:Events for May 2025 – Jamyang London Buddhist CentreAbout this series\nWednesday evenings at Jamyang are dedicated to courses in advanced philosophy. Join our Resident Teacher\, Geshe Tenzin Namdak\, as he helps us investigate the finer points of the philosophy of emptiness and the Buddhist understanding of the nature of reality from various perspectives\, and through the works of the great Buddhist scholars of the past.\nAbout this course\nOver two years\, we’ll embark on a profound voyage through a text of incomparable stature within the Buddhist cannon: Entering the Middle Way\, by the revered master\, Chandrakirti. We are often reminded by Geshe Namdak that His Holiness the Dalai Lama reads Chandrakirti every day\, a clear testament to the indispensability of his work for all Buddhist practitioners training in the Nalanda tradition.\nIn Entering the Middle Way\, Chandrakirti interprets and upholds Nagarjuna’s philosophical position as put forward in his root text on wisdom\, while drawing upon the structure of the Ten Grounds Sutra to supplement this analysis of the nature of reality with an exposition of the bodhisattva grounds\, or the stages of realisation a practitioner must traverse on the way to enlightenment. Chandrakirti\, therefore\, ‘enters’ Nagarjuna’s text by way of the profound view\, as well as the vast activities of the bodhisattva. The comprehensive treatment of both method and wisdom\, as well as Chandrakirti’s formidable scholarship\, are just a couple of the reasons why Entering the Middle Way has endured as one of the most prized treasures of the Nalanda tradition.\nGeshe Namdak will open the door to this text and reveal its many riches to us over the span of two years. It goes without saying that this is a very special and rare opportunity\, which we are delighted to share with you. Please join us on what we anticipate will be an incredibly meaningful journey.\nAbout Geshe Tenzin Namdak\nAfter completing his university studies in Hydrology\, Geshe Namdak worked as an environmental researcher in the Netherlands. He began studying Buddhism at Maitreya Institute and was eventually ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama before completing the 20-year Geshe degree at Sera Jey monastic university in India\, as well as the traditional one-year Vajrayana study program at Gyume Tantric College. He is now Resident Teacher of Jamyang London Buddhist Centre.\nSchedule\nWednesdays | 18:30 – 20:00\nHow to join\nSign up for the full course below\, or for an individual class. If you would like to set up a monthly subscription to donate towards the course\, please do so here: https://jamyang.co.uk/product/chandrakirti

SUMMARY:Lojong Mind Training
DESCRIPTION:Lojong Mind TrainingHow its application can help us prepare for death and difficult times with confidence and compassion\n“Happiness should be brought under control\, and suffering ended. If you are lonely\, it will be the companion of sorrow. If you are sick\, it will nurse you.” – saying of the Kadam Lamas. \nLojong or ‘mind training’ is an essential part of Buddhist training that teaches us how to transform problems into opportunities for deep spiritual growth. Ven. Amy will explore how lojong practices can help us lessen fear\, regret and confusion in times of adversity; so this program will not only help us prepare for the major transition of death\, but will also show us how we can develop a more peaceful and meaningful life. \n“In our heart we do not think death will happen to us. Living in denial we spend our lives in distraction filling each available moment with constant busyness.”- Geshe Jampa Tegchok \nThis 4-session course will incorporate a variety of lojong texts such as the profound yet brief\, Turning Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment\, by Jikme Tenpe Nyime\, the Third Drodupchen Rinpoche and The Eight Verses of Thought Transformation by Kadampa Geshe Langri Thangpa. \nAdditionally\, lojong practice helps us: \nCultivate mental resilience\nDevelop compassion\nShift focus from external blame to self-reflection and accountability\nReduce anxiety\, increase inner peace\, and develop healthier behavior overall.\nVen. Amy will also be guiding a full weekend on Lojong\, which will be more focused on meditation\, at our retreat center in Loenen. \nYour teacher\nVenerable Amy Miller is a beloved spiritual teacher\, practitioner and Buddhist nun in the Tibetan tradition. She has dedicated her life to sharing the profound teachings of Buddhism with the world. SUMMARY:Introduction to Tantra
DESCRIPTION:An advanced approach to enlightenment\nTantra in our tradition refers to a unique higher-level system of spiritual practice that can streamline one’s path to enlightenment. Incorporating rituals\, meditation\, mantra recitation\, and visualization\, we can transform ordinary activities\, emotions\, and challenges into opportunities for swift spiritual growth. Tantra trains practitioners to view all phenomena as inherently pure and sacred. This perspective breaks down dualistic thinking and fosters a profound sense of interconnectedness and reverence for life. Due to its emphasis on the union of wisdom and compassion it is considered an accelerated path to enlightenment. \nIn this 3-class course you will learn: \nwhat tantra is\nhow it works\nwhy it is a powerful form of practice\nabout the four classes of tantra\nto practice simple Kriya tantric methods\nto integrate tantra with Lamrim meditation for optimal results.\nYour teacher\nVenerable Amy Miller is a beloved spiritual teacher\, practitioner and Buddhist nun in the Tibetan tradition. SUMMARY:Events for May 2025 – Jamyang London Buddhist Centre
DESCRIPTION:Events for May 2025 – Jamyang London Buddhist CentreJoin us as we embark upon a 3-month exploration of this famous text. Guided by Geshe Tenzin Namdak\, we will delve into Arya Nagarjuna’s poetic instructions that convey the entire Mahayana path with unusual clarity and memorable imagery.\nAbout the Author\nArya Nagarjuna (2nd-3rd century) is widely regarded as the second Buddha and the trailblazer of the Madhyamika school of Buddhist philosophy. His coming was prophesied by Shakyamuni himself as the teacher who would appear when the karma of beings was ripe\, to expound and clarify the Buddha’s profound teaching on emptiness.\nAbout the Text\nLetter to a Friend is a poem composed by Nagarjuna as a letter of advice to his friend\, King Gautamiputra\, who presided over the powerful kingdom of Satvahana. The Letter is a concise and comprehensive introduction to the entire path and practice of Buddhism. Widely studied by both lay and monastic\, the instructions therein are of special interest to those who wish to take up spiritual activity while continuing to live and work in society; they are meant to convey the whole meaning of the Dharma to the ordinary person in a language and style that are easy to understand.
